Credit: ESAEjected by springs designed to impart a 7-rpm rotation for stability, theHuygens probe was jettisoned from the Cassini mothership around 10:08 p.m.EST. Flight controllers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena,Calif., verified a clean separation 16 minutes later."The short story is the release went absolutely nominally," said EarlMaize, Cassini deputy program manager. "As near as we can tell from all thetelemetry we've seen, we've had a perfect separation. The release sequencewas executed on board the spacecraft at 7:07 this evening Pacific StandardTime. We were out of radio contact at the time, we expected the release toimpart a recoil to the spacecraft and it would take it some minutes torecover radio contact with the Earth. We are now on our way to Titan. Throughout the descent, data from Huygens' instruments will betransmitted to Cassini, flying past the moon nearly 40,000 miles away,stored on digital recorders and later re-transmitted to Earth.Huygens represents one of the most ambitious space projects everattempted by the European Space Agency and one that if successful, willreveal a new world to the gaze of eager scientists."Today's release is another successful milestone in the Cassini-Huygensodyssey," David Southwood, science director for the European Space Agency,said in a statement. "This was an amicable separation after seven years ofliving together. Our thanks to our partners at NASA for the lift. Eachspacecraft will now continue on its own but we expect they'll keep in touchto complete this amazing mission. Now all our hopes and expectations arefocused on getting the first in-situ data from a new world we've beendreaming of exploring for decades." The stage was set for the probe's release Dec. 16 when flight controllersat JPL carried out orbital trim maneuver No. 8, an 84.9-second main enginefiring that put Cassini - and Huygens - on a collision course with Titan.With Huygens now safely on its way, Cassini's engine will be fired againDec. 27 to move the mother ship off the current impact trajectory and set upthe proper geometry to relay data during the entry probe's descent.A timeline of critical upcoming events is available . After slowing to about 870 mph due toatmospheric friction, Huygens' aft cover will be pulled away by a pilotchute and the spacecraft's 27-foot-wide main parachute will deploy. Thechute will be jettisoned 15 minutes after entry begins and from that pointon, Huygens will ride beneath a smaller 9.8-foot-wide parachute. Impact onthe surface at some 11 mph is expected around 7:31 a.m. on Jan. 14Assuming the 705-pound Huygens doesn't splash down in a hydrocarbon lake,"we have good confidence the probe will survive landing," said Jean-PierreLebreton, European Space Agency project scientist. "The landing speed isvery low and there is a very good probability the probe will survive landingand we have capability to do measurements for half an hour on the surface.During the three-hour measurement phase, the probe will transmit its data tothe overflying orbiter."The original flight plan called for Huygens to enter Titan's atmospherein late November as Cassini streaked overhead at an altitude of just 746miles. But engineers were forced to delay Huygens' arrival to Januarybecause of an issue with the radio aboard the Cassini mothership that willbe used to relay data from Huygens to Earth.During a post-launch test, engineers discovered the radio receiver couldnot cope with the Doppler shift in the frequency of the signal coming fromHuygens due to Cassini's high relative velocity. Much like the pitch of asiren changes as a police car races past a stationary observer, thefrequency of radio waves can shift a significant amount if relativevelocities are high enough."Originally, the closing speed of Cassini coming up on Huygens, which isfor all practical purposes sitting still once it's in the atmosphere, theclosing speed was about 5.8 kilometers per second (13,000 mph)," Mitchellsaid in a recent interview. "We were coming in almost dead overhead andgoing off to the right at about 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) altitude."The solution was to minimize the Doppler shift by reducing the relativevelocities of the two spacecraft. That was accomplished by changingCassini's trajectory slightly and delaying Huygens' release to ChristmasEve. During the Jan. 14 descent, Cassini now will be 37,300 miles from Titanand the difference in velocity between the two spacecraft will never be morethan 8,500 mph."We have pretty solid evidence that's going to work," Mitchell said. "Wedid some tests where we used the Deep Space Network stations transmitting anS-band signal with telemetry modulated onto the carrier so that from thereceiver's point of view on the Cassini spacecraft, it should have simulatedthe probe quite accurately. We adjusted the frequency, taking into accountthe motion of everything, so that the frequency of the received signal atthe receiver should very closely if not exactly match the frequency that thereceiver will see coming from Huygens." The tests were successful and a potentially crippling design flaw wasresolved with no significant loss of science. And the scientific communitycan't wait to get that data. Credit: ESABigger than the planet Mercury, Titan is the only moon in the solarsystem with a thick atmosphere, one in which hydrocarbons are believed tofall as rain, possibly forming liquid ethane pools on the moon's ultra-coldsurface.Cassini flew past Titan in late October, beaming back pictures and radardata that revealed a strange, striated landscape with sharply defined brightand dark regions. Few clouds were present and no large craters wereapparent, indicating tectonic, volcanic or depositional processes at workthat have resurfaced the moon on a global scale.But there was no clear evidence of lakes or pools of liquid ethane orsimilar materials that many scientists believe must be present given themoon's ultra-low temperature, high atmospheric pressure and hydrocarbonchemistry.In short, Titan's mysteries withstood Cassini's initial scientificassault."We've been saying for a long time now that Titan was the largest expanseof unexplored terrain in the solar system," said imaging team leader CarolynPorco, a leading expert on Saturn's rings. We'll do a 360-(degree trip) round the space station to get good photo imagery from all angles."After the fly-around is complete, the shuttle astronauts will take a break for lunch and then use the ship's robot around to pick up the orbiter boom sensor system, or OBSS, for a final set of nose cap and wing leading edge inspections."On flight day two, the scans are primarily looking for damage caused by the launch environment," said shuttle Flight Director Cathy Koerner. "Here, what we're looking for are any micrometeoroid impacts that may have occurred while we were on orbit. After one last round of hugs and handshakes, the shuttle crew floated back into Atlantis and hatches were sealed at 1:03 p.m. to set the stage for undocking early Monday.The brief farewell was particularly poignant for Dan Tani, returning to Earth after an extended four-month stay in space. Originally scheduled to return in December, Tani's stay aloft was extended two months after Atlantis was grounded in December with fuel sensor problems. Along with missing the holidays with his family, Tani was in orbit when his 90-year-old mother was killed in a Dec. 19 car wreck."Dan has done a phenomenal job over the last several months," said station commander Peggy Whitson. "He was here a few months more than he had originally planned on, but he's really made up for it and done an incredible job while he was here."Tani took a moment to describe his impressions of the space station, saying "today I feel very optimistic about our space program and our society because I'm here, I've spent time with a man from France, from Italy and from Germany and from Russia. Nations that have not always been friendly are now cooperating and we're doing great things.""That was the first thing I was thinking about today," he said. "The other thing I was thinking about today was women, and it's been a very big topic on this flight because when I flew up there were two women commanders and for whatever reason, that was huge news. The unspoken news there was they were both fantastically great commanders and it was a privilege to fly with both of them."The other thing I was thinking about today was my mother... my inspiration," Tani said, choking back tears. "And of course, my job is easy compared to my wife's. Jane's the love of my life and she had the hard work while I was having fun. So I can't wait to get back to her and my two little girls."If we were in Russia, this would be the third toast - the toast for the women in our lives. I've enjoyed all my time here and I can't wait to get back with all my pictures and videos. So thank you so much for all your help on the ground and really, we couldn't have done it without you. STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: January 21, 2005Liquid methane apparently falls like rain on Saturn's smog-shrouded moon Titan, washing down icy channels that ultimately spill into broad lakebeds dotted with ice islands and shoals, according to the latest data from Europe's Huygens probe. While the spacecraft did not detect any standing pools of liquefied natural gas in its immediate area, the data indicate rainfall is common on Titan and that liquid methane is present within a few inches of its surface. This mosaic of three frames provides unprecedented detail of the high ridge area including the flow down into a major river channel from different sources. "This is a planet where the liquids are rightthere. It might have rained yesterday. This is really a very activesituation. That's the important news about detecting methane. It isn't thatwe think methane is there. It's really there in the liquid state."Said Martin Tomasko, principal investigator with the Huygens descentimager instrument: "What we know is the place we landed is dry at themoment. But the liquid is not 200 meters underground, the liquid was withina few centimeters of the surface, indicating that it must have rained notvery long ago. Does that mean yesterday or the day before, the week before?We don't really know. But the feeling is, in the place we landed, it mustrain fairly frequently. But we can't be more precise than that."NASA's Cassini Saturn orbiter released the Huygens probe on ChristmasEve. The small spacecraft, built by the European Space Agency, slammed intoTitan's thick nitrogen atmosphere Jan. 14 and descended by parachute to themoon's frozen surface, snapping pictures and sampling the atmosphere as itfell.Hitting the surface at about 11 mph, Huygens broke through a thincrust-like material and settled several inches into a spongy hydrocarbon"soil" with the consistency of loose sand. Nearby chunks of dirty water iceshow clear signs of fluid erosion, indicating the spacecraft landed in azone that at least occasionally experiences flowing liquids.At a news conference early today to unveil the latest data from Huygens,Owen said pre-landing predictions that liquid methane should exist on thesurface of the ultra-cold world - minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit at thesurface - were pretty much correct."What we've learned is that our speculation is really pretty good," Owensaid. "The main difference, the main new thing that we have is that indeed,we can detect liquid methane on the surface. It's not seas of liquid ethane,it's really liquid methane, liquid natural gas." Dark channels can be seen in the light-coloredelevated terrain leading to larger river bed-like features that empty into abasin.After studying the images for a week, Tomasko said his team believes thechannels "really are evidence of rain.""These branching, dendritic channels are evidence of rain and the darkmaterial in the bottoms of the channels is very likely this photochemicalsmog that falls out of the atmosphere, coats the whole terrain and getspreferentially washed off the top of the ridges," he said."The top of the ridges are ... not really very bright, they're relativelydark, but the dark material is definitely concentrated in the bottom ofthese drainage channels. And these ridges, we think, are made not ofsilicate rocks as on the Earth, but frozen, hard water ice. So we thinkwe're seeing water ice ridges washed off by rainfall with a liquid and aconcentration of these organic materials in the bottom of the (channels)."Looking at a larger mosaic that included the original picture, Tomaskosaid "we see this river system which flows down into this delta, into thislow-lying terrain. We see this ridge draining from the back and thesedendritic structures and then coming down from the front draining also intothis broad, low-lying terrain."In a new picture released today, Tomasko described additional featuresthat indicate flowing liquids, including short, stubby channels that couldindicate methane springs and areas that might be extrusions of water ice.Another photo showed a thin ridge in one of the pool-like basins that hadmultiple channels cut through it, presumably from erosion, giving theappearance of a chain of islands. "We don't think we see liquids in these areas, but we do thinkthere's plenty of evidence that there was flowing fluids on the surface ofTitan."For methane be present in the atmosphere today, it must be constantlyreplenished. Owen said the source of the methane was Titan itself."The photochemistry is happening up above, breaking methane apart,fragments are combining, making more complex things, making these smogparticles and they're precipitating down to the surface," he said. "Themethane, as we expected from the beginning, must condense because it's socold on the surface of Titan that we would expect liquid natural gas to bepresent there. And now the question is, is it really there?"Data from Huygens shows nitrogen is the dominant gas in the upperatmosphere of Titan. But as the probe descended, methane concentrations shotup."This is just like what happens on the Earth with water vapor," Owensaid. "Water on Earth is confined to the lower atmosphere. ... The reasonis, there's a very low temperature point in the atmosphere and there's thesame thing on Titan, there's a kind of cold trap that forces the methane tobe down below so that the methane increases more rapidly than the nitrogenas you go down into the lower atmosphere. The process is thought to begin in the high atmosphere, at altitudes above 400 kilometers (250 miles), where ultraviolet light breaks down methane and nitrogen molecules. The products are believed to react to form more complex organic molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen that can combine to form the very small particles seen as haze.This ultraviolet view of Titan has been falsely colored. The main body is colored pale orange as seen in true color images. Above the orange disc are two distinct layers of atmospheric haze that have been brightened and falsely colored violet to enhance their visibility. It is not currently understood why there are two separate haze layers. This and other questions await answers as the four-year Cassini tour continues, with many more planned flybys of Titan. From the inside out, the "Cassini division" in faint red at left is followed by the A ring in its entirety. The A ring begins with a "dirty" interior of red followed by a general pattern of more turquoise as it spreads away from the planet, which indicates denser material made up of ice. The red band roughly three-fourths of the way outward in the A ring is known as the Encke gap.Download a larger image version Researchers from CU-Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, Joshua Colwell and Larry Esposito, said the UV spectra taken during the Cassini spacecraft's orbital insertion June 30 show definite compositional variation in the A, B and C rings.Esposito, who discovered the F ring around Saturn in 1979 using Pioneer 11 data, is the team leader for Cassini's Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph, or UVIS, a $12.5 million instrument riding on the spacecraft. A UVIS team member and ring expert, Colwell created the color-enhanced images from the spectra.The CU-Boulder built UVIS instrument is capable of resolving the rings to show features up to 60 miles across, roughly 10 times the resolution obtained by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. The instrument was able to resolve the "Cassini division," discovered by Giovanni Domenico Cassini in the 17th century, which separates the A and B rings of Saturn, proving the rings are not one contiguous feature.The ring system begins from the inside out with the D, C, B and A rings followed by the F, G and E rings. The red in both images indicates sparser ringlets likely made of "dirty," and possibly smaller, particles than in the denser, icier turquoise ringlets. This image shows the outer C and inner B rings respectively from left to right, with the inner B ring beginning a little more than halfway across the image. The new observations reveal that the wind travels in the same direction as Titan's rotation, and that the stratospheric winds are milder (about 425 km/hr. or 264 miles/hr.) near the equatorial regions, as the jet stream model predicts. HIPWAC was designed and built at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The Subaru telescope is operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.Wind direction on Titan is difficult to measure remotely because Titan?? upper atmosphere consists of an orange haze of hydrocarbons (molecules of hydrogen and carbon) with no global features that show movement.The observations were originally encouraged by the Cassini mission, an international mission of NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) that will employ a large robotic spacecraft to explore Saturn and its system of 31 known moons beginning this July. The Huygens probe, built by ESA, is attached to the Cassini spacecraft and will separate in December on a 22-day course ending with a plunge into Titan's atmosphere. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., manages the Cassini mission for NASA."Our observations will complement local wind measurements by the Huygens probe during its descent, because we offer a global view. Acquiring the direction and speed of global winds is important for understanding the dynamics of planetary atmospheres, particularly dynamics of those bodies that rotate slowly on their axes. Titan?? 'day' is 16 Earth days," said Dr. Theodor Kostiuk of NASA Goddard."We hope to be able to repeat our success during the probe?? descent so we can have detailed local information from Cassini and the Huygens probe and a global portrait from HIPWAC and Subaru from the same time," said Professor Hiroshi Karoji, Director of the Subaru telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii.Titan, the second largest moon in the solar system, is larger than the planet Mercury and is the only known moon with a thick atmosphere, actually 1.5 times more dense than Earth's. Because it is far from the Sun, Titan is extremely cold (surface temperature of about minus 178 Celsius (minus 289 Fahrenheit), allowing a hydrocarbon rain that may form gasoline-like seas. Scientists are eager to explore Titan because its atmosphere may resemble the Earth's atmosphere shortly after our planet's formation, when it was rich with hydrocarbon molecules that became the building blocks of life.HIPWAC can measure wind speed and direction on Titan, even though the moon's atmosphere lacks apparent features, because the instrument relies instead on the faint, infrared glow of the hydrocarbons in Titan's atmosphere. Infrared light, invisible to the human eye, can pass through Titan's hydrocarbon haze and is detectable by special instruments. HIPWAC measures the very slight color (frequency) change of the hydrocarbon's infrared light caused by the motion of these molecules as they are carried by Titan's winds. This is called a Doppler shift, and is similar to the change in tone of an ambulance siren as it races by. Since the hydrocarbons are moved along by Titan's winds, the Doppler shift of their emitted light gives the wind velocity.To measure such miniscule Doppler shifts, HIPWAC must be capable of distinguishing among infrared colors, or frequencies, to a very fine degree. This is called spectral resolution, and HIPWAC possesses a spectral resolution 200 times better than any instrument in regular use today. It also must measure specific infrared frequencies very accurately, and HIPWAC can identify a frequency to one part in a hundred million.Subaru telescope brings to HIPWAC the light gathering power of a modern large aperture telescope. Subaru?? 8.2-meter (27- foot) diameter mirror is the largest single-piece mirror in the world that is currently in regular operation. Since HIPWAC achieves its high spectral resolution by finely dividing light into different frequencies, the more light it has to work with the better. STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: February 28, 2006If NASA can get the shuttle Discovery off the ground on the second post-Columbia mission this spring or summer, the agency will have a realistic shot at launching three flights this year, program manager Wayne Hale told reporters today.But the shuttle program faces a wide variety of complex technical challenges as it readies Discovery for launch as early as May 10, including critical wind tunnel tests to prove external tank modifications will work as expected; engineering studies to determine whether additional changes are needed; resolution of main engine seal and contamination concerns; and a success-oriented processing schedule that assumes no major problems develop between now and then.Even so, Hale said he remains "very optimistic that if we can fly in May or July, that we'll get three flights, three shuttle flights, up in this calendar year."That assumes, of course, that no large pieces of foam insulation break away from shuttle fuel tanks during launch and that whatever debris does fall off doesn't cause any serious damage."It does depend on what happens with those flights because when we get back from a mission, we have to review what happened and see if there's anything that affects the next flight," Hale said."We have been holding a series of management meetings to make sure we have the right resources staged to be able to look at any in-flight anomalies and come a resolution on them in the 10 or so weeks we'd have between flights. That is going to be a challenge to change from this kind of interregnum period, where we've had lots and lots of time to work on anything and everything to the maximum extent possible down to something that says well, we need to kind of turn the crank here and do what is reasonable and proper, surely, but probably not guild the lily. ... I remain optimistic that if we fly this summer, we'll be able to get three flights off this calendar year. I will commit to you and to the team and to the crew that we won't proceed until we have done the work that we need to do to prove it's safe to fly."Hale will chair a program requirements control board - PRCB - meeting Thursday that will consider making the following dates "no-earlier-than" launch targets:STS-121/ET-119 (Discovery/ISS-ULF 1.1): 05/10/06STS-300/ET-118 (Atlantis/emergency rescue mission): 08/04/06 (if needed)STS-115/ET-118 (Atlantis/ISS-12A): 08/28/06 (NOTE: one day before actual opening of launch window; based on processing strategy)STS-301/ET-123 (Discovery/emergency rescue mission): 10/28/06 (if needed)STS-116/ET-123 (Endeavour/ISS-12A.1): 11/16/06 (NASA is expected to use Discovery for this flight because of workforce/processing issues that have delayed completion of a major overhaul of Endeavour)Because of photo-documentation requirements to launch the next flight in daylight, and to ensure external tank separation in daylight half a world away, NASA has to deal with limited launch windows. The next three useable windows are May 3-22; July 1-19; and Aug. 29-Sept. 14. NASA would give up the daylight launch constraint for an emergency mission and may give it up for flights after May if the upcoming mission suffers no major foam loss and if ongoing analysis shows new cameras and radar systems could detect debris shedding in darkness.As it now stands, NASA will be extremely hard pressed to make May 10. Launch director Mike Leinbach said the processing schedule has no built-in contingency time to handle unexpected problems."External tanks typically are not in the critical path for a launch," he said. "That's not the case this time. This time, when the tank shows up it is in the critical path to get to a May launch attempt. ... We used to provide on the order of 25 to 30 days of contingency in the whole processing flow, from the tank, through the SRBs, the orbiter processing and the vertical flow out at the launch pad. What we've done this time is, we've put together a schedule that has no contingency in it."Some people could call that an aggressive schedule. I like to call it an exciting schedule. It has a reasonable chance of success. If we run into a significant technical issue, we don't have much time to resolve it, obviously. But barring the big 'gotcha' in the processing, we feel pretty good about making that schedule."An official launch date will not be set until much later in the processing flow and "we will run right down to the wire to whatever the launch date turns out to be," Hale said of the ongoing work and analyses. "Right now, I have asked, we've put in a request for the team to evaluate a May 10 launch date. We're going to review the response to that request on Thursday. I expect, and already have been given some hints, that there are going to be some poke outs. The question is not are there poke outs, the question is how many and can we mitigate them. ... We're going to have a very interesting discussion Thursday."The major change to the shuttle's external fuel tank is removal of two protuberance air-load - PAL - ramps that ran up the lower hydrogen section of the tank and the upper oxygen section. The ramps were in place to shield two external pressurization lines and a critical cable tray from potentially damaging aerodynamic buffeting as the shuttle rockets through the sound barrier shortly after launch.But during Discovery's launch on the first post-Columbia mission last July, a large piece of the hydrogen PAL ramp broke off. In the wake of that incident, NASA managers decided to re-evaluate the engineering justification for the PAL ramps and tentatively concluded, based on computer modeling, that the design was overly conservative and that the ramps weren't needed.The ramps were then removed from ET-119 and the huge tank was shipped to Florida on the assumption upcoming high-speed wind tunnel tests using mock ups of tank hardware will confirm computational fluid dynamics modeling. If they don't, all bets are off."The computer simulations and the paper analysis indicates that the structure should be able to take the aerodynamic loads that we generate on the cable tray, particularly after we removed the PAL ramp. But the proof is in the wind tunnel testing. We've got a series of wind tunnel tests, the first kicks off in just a couple of weeks at the Glenn Research Center, and we hope to get the data that will confirm what we hope is conservative engineering analysis on paper. If we find a surprise in the wind tunnel ... then we'll go deal with that."When we look forward to the launch date, the thing that is going to pace getting Discovery off the ground is not the work that we're doing at the Kennedy Space Center, because we believe we have that well in hand and know what to do, but it is the engineering analysis and tests that go toward proving that what we have assembled on the launch pad is safe to fly."Overall, NASA engineers believe changes to the tank in the wake of Discovery's last mission will limit the size of any foam debris to small one-ounce chunks the size of a matchbox or smaller. The chunk of foam that came off during the July mission weighed more than a pound. Other areas of foam loss also have been addressed."Just to make it perfectly clear to you, foam will still come off the tank after we have done all of these mitigation efforts," Hale said. "What we have done is worked off all the large pieces and we believe the pieces that come off will be small. ... Our task ahead of us is to ensure that all of these very small pieces of foam, most of them less than an ounce, will be of a size that they cannot have enough energy to do damage if they strike the orbiter. So that is work ahead of us."I wanted to make sure everyone understands we are trying to eliminate critical foam loss, but we will expect to see foam coming off this next tank. As we go forward in the manifest for the next several flights, we'll continue to make improvements so we can eliminate even smaller and smaller pieces of foam loss."Along with final tank modifications, the wind tunnel testing and on-going analysis of the launch debris environment, NASA also faces additional work to complete servicing of Discovery's heat shield tiles and resolution of concern about out-of-specification main engine seals and metallic debris trapped in a main propulsion system oxygen propellant line.Hale said he is optimistic the seal issue will not hold up the launch even though at least some of the six seals in question do not meet printed specifications. The propulsion system has passed a helium signature leak test and engineers currently are evaluating whether the fact that some of the seals are slightly too thin could cause any problems. If worse comes to worse, the current seals can be replaced - even at the launch pad - but it's not clear if such work could be done in time to support a May 10 launch attempt.The other propulsion system issue - debris trapped in a main engine liquid oxygen inlet filter - is less clear cut. At issue is the nature of the debris. If it is made of titanium, it could pose an ignition threat during engine operation. There is no titanium in the liquid oxygen system and engineers say it's probably a metal that poses no threat. But they can't prove it. The debris cannot be removed without breaking open the propulsion system, which engineers don't want to do out of fear the fix might cause additional problems."We can't get it out," said Leinbach. "To open up the system, to clean the screen, is an extensive job. It still fits the processing flow, but it's an extensive job, one that we don't want to do. The Phoebe flyby was a priceless opportunity to study what may be a captured chunk of debris left over from the birth of the solar system. But it was just the opening act in one of the most scientifically rich voyages of planetary exploration ever attempted. "It is really, truly the flagship mission of our time," said Carolyn Porco, chief of Cassini's imaging team and an authority on Saturn's rings. "We are exploring the richest planetary system available to us with this magnificent spacecraft, which is the most sophisticated suite of instrumentation ever taken into the outer solar system.
