STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: September 5, 2006NASA managers are holding open the possibility of extending the shuttle Atlantis' mission by at least one and possibly two days to give the crew time to carry out additional heat shield inspections and to handle any unexpected problems that might crop up, officials said today.Atlantis is scheduled for blastoff Wednesday at 12:29 p.m. on a space station assembly mission considered one of the most complex shuttle flights in recent memory. There are no technical problems of any significance at pad 39B and forecasters are predicting a 70 percent chance of good weather Wednesday, Thursday and Friday."We really are working no issues, the vehicle's in very good shape," said LeRoy Cain, launch site chairman of NASA's Mission Management Team. "I conducted the go/no-go poll to continue and everybody on the team is go and in good spirits. We're ready to press forward from here."Launch Director Mike Leinbach said engineers may move the launch pad service gantry away from Atlantis an hour or so early today to beat the onset of expected afternoon thunderstorms."If we get it back before the weather sets in, that's great," he said. "If not, we'll recover that time after the weather passes. Typically, we hold four or five hours in abeyance for RSS (rotating service structure) retract. So if we do get hit by the afternoon weather, that really shouldn't pose a problem for us."The Mission Management Team plans to meet at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday to assess the weather and give engineers clearance to proceed with loading Atlantis' external tank with liquid oxygen and hydrogen rocket fuel.Fueling is scheduled to begin at 2:33 a.m. and if all goes well, commander Brent Jett, pilot Chris Ferguson, flight engineer Dan Burbank, Joe Tanner, Canadian astronaut Steve MacLean and Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper will begin strapping in around 9:09 a.m.Liftoff is targeted for 12:28:49 p.m. If Atlantis fails to get off the ground Wednesday, NASA can try again Thursday and Friday. After that, the flight will be delayed until after the Russians launch a fresh crew to the international space station Sept. 18 and bring the lab's outgoing crew back to Earth Sept. 29. The next daylight launch opportunity or the shuttle after Friday is Oct. 26.With an on-time launching, Atlantis will dock with the space station Friday at 8:40 a.m. The next day, a new solar array truss will be attached to the outpost and the crew will stage the first of three spacewalks to make critical electrical connections, remove launch restraints and perform other activation tasks.As it now stands, a second spacewalk would be carried out the next day, followed by solar array extension the day after that and then a third spacewalk. But managers may insert an extra day between the first two spacewalks to let the crew carry out "focused inspections" of the shuttle's heat shield based on whatever they see during an initial inspection the day after launch."We don't (currently) have that scheduled in the STS-115 timeline, but we know that is a likely possibility based on the flight day two or three inspections, that we'll need to go back and look at some areas in more focused detail," said shuttle Program Manager Wayne Hale. "There's a hope that perhaps we won't need to do that."The more difficult case for the team to execute, both the astronauts in orbit and mission control, is two back-to-back EVAs. If we need to do a focused inspection, the thinking is ... we would insert a day between the first and second EVAs. That becomes a somewhat lighter day for the crew and mission control, so it's an easier day to stand by for."What we'd really like to do is not have to do focused inspection, in other words, have such a clean vehicle that no inspections are required. Then we can save that day, bank it, and keep it (for) the end of the mission in case we run into any difficulties in the assembly process. Lifting off tomorrow or even the day after tomorrow, we really will have the capability to extend not one, but two days to the docked period so we would have the capability to handle both contingencies."If an extension day is, in fact, inserted after the first spacewalk, the second spacewalk would occur on Sept. 11, the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington.In other developments, Hale gave reporters an update on NASA's work to develop safer ice-frost ramps on the shuttle's external tank. The ice-frost ramps are buildups of foam insulation around brackets that support two pressurization lines and a cable tray. The insulation prevents ice from forming that could break off during launch and strike the shuttle.The IFRs are manually sprayed on and then sculpted on top of so-called acreage foam. Post-Columbia testing shows areas where foam is applied on top of other foam are susceptible to cracking due to differential thermal effects. Cracks, in turn, can lead to foam shedding during launch.The IFRs are officially classified as "probable/catastrophic," meaning there is a 50-50 chance of a catastrophic failure over the 100-flight life of a space shuttle. It is the only system on the shuttle that is so classified and NASA is developing a near-term fix to reduce the chances of foam debris breaking away."One of the options was to cover these little pieces of foam, about a pound or two pounds of foam at every bracket, cover them with a titanium shell, titanium being a metal that would retain the foam," Hale said today. "Titanium has a low thermal conductivity, so the hope was they could fasten that to this tank and not have ice form on the outside."They were unsuccessful in the environmental testing and the thermal testing to prevent ice from forming on the outside of the metal brackets. So the option (under development) is to reshape the foam, a reformulation of the foam to remove the SLA, or super-lightweight ablative foam core, and just use the standard foam."The all-foam design "will be what we take to the wind tunnel tests later this month to make sure it will hold together," Hale said. The new design is similar in appearance to an earlier design that broke apart during wind tunnel testing last spring. It was that failure that prompted NASA to stick with the current design, accepting the associated risk, while engineers developed an improved design."To the casual observer, it's not going to look a whole lot different than what we tried last April that didn't hold together in the wind tunnel," Hale said. "There are some differences internally in the way it's put together and some small shape differences. The bottom line is, we want to reduce the footprint."Every one of these 17 ice-frost ramps on the hydrogen part of the tank has a footprint of foam over foam, which is what we believe causes us concern with shedding of foam. So we have reduced the area of foam on top of foam, it's a much smaller footprint, and the thermal analysis indicates we will be much less susceptible to the thermally induced cracking that occurs in the underlying foam region, which is the goal of this exercise."This is an interim fix," Hale said. "We're coming back with a final fix in about eight more tanks after that. So we think we've got a good design, we'll put it in the wind tunnel later this month to make sure we've got a good design. The shuttle's patched-up external fuel tank, its foam insulation heavily damaged by hail in February, appeared to withstand the rigors of launch without shedding any dangerous foam debris. Credit: Ben Cooper/Spaceflight NowWith commander Rick Sturckow and pilot Lee Archambault at the controls, Atlantis' three hydrogen-fueled main engines roared to life and spun up to full throttle before ignition of the ship's twin solid-fuel boosters at 7:38:04 p.m.The fuel-laden 4.5-million-pound spaceship instantly climbed away from pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, wheeled about to line up on a northesterly trajectory and rocketed away up the East Coast to kick off NASA's 118th shuttle flight.Launch originally was scheduled for March 15, but the flight was put on hold after a freak Feb. 26 hail storm that blasted the top of the tank's foam insulation. More than 3,000 dings and gouges had to be repaired with poured or sprayed-on foam insulation, giving the tank a pockmarked, two-tone complexion.The first 135 seconds or so of flight are considered the most critical from a debris impact perspective because during that period, the shuttle is still in the lower atmosphere. Any lightweight foam debris that separates from the tank would decelerate rapidly in the thicker atmosphere, allowing the shuttle to run into it at a high relative velocity. Higher up in thinner air, debris does not slow as rapidly and impact velocities are lower.While detailed analysis of launch camera and video footage is not yet complete, television views beamed down from a camera mounted on the side of the tank showed a clean ascent with only one small piece of debris spotted just after solid rocket booster separation two minutes and five seconds after launch."We are glad to report that the external tank has performed in a magnificent manner," said shuttle Program Manager Wayne Hale. "I couldn't be prouder of the team and I think this bodes well for the future as we look forwared to the completion of the international space station."As for the debris, Hale said a preliminary analysis of launch video "indicates it didn't strike the orbiter.""It was at the very end, or just past, the aerodynamically sensitive time," he said. "Hopefully as we continue to make improvements in the tank we will eliminate even that, which should not be a hazard occurring that late in the flight."The remainder of Atlantis' eight-and-a-half-minute climb to orbit was uneventful. Aboard the space station half a world away, commander Fyodor Yurchikhin, flight engineer Oleg Kotov and Sunita Williams watched the launch on a video feed provided by flight controllers in Houston. If all goes well, Sturckow will guide the shuttle to a docking with the space station around 3:38 p.m. Sunday afternoon."What a great way to start the year and what a great way to start this mission," said Bill Gerstenmaier, chief of space operations at NASA headquarters. Credit: Ben Cooper/Spaceflight NowThe primary goal of Atlantis' mission is to attach a huge new set of solar panels to the right side of the station's main power truss, along with a powerful rotary joint to keep the huge arrays face-on to the sun. The combined truss segments tip the scales at nearly 36,000 pounds, making this one of the heaviest space station payloads to date. The two new solar panels, when fully extended, will stretch 240 feet from tip to tip and slowly rotate like giant paddle wheels.The astronauts also hope to complete the retraction of another set of identical arrays, used to provide power to the lab complex during the initial stages of assembly, so it can be moved to its permanent position on the left end of the power truss later this year.The crew of shuttle Discovery ran into major problems retracting one side of the P6 array in December and ultimately staged an unplanned spacewalk, manually shaking free stuck grommets on frayed guide wires to fold the pleated blind-like array into its storage canister. While Atlantis' crew hopes to benefit from lessons learned and retract the remaining blanket automatically, they will be standing by to provide hands-on spacewalk assistance if necessary.Attaching the new $367.3 million S3/S4 solar array truss segments, completing the retraction of P6 and ultimately re-extending its two wings on the port side of the main power truss later this year will clear the way for attachment of European and Japanese research modules, both major milestones on the road to completing the station in 2010."I hesitate to say any part of the sequence is more critical than any other," NASA Administrator Mike Griffin told CBS News. "It's a chain and you can break any link, and the chain doesn't function. But you have to recognize that the sequence leading up to getting our first international partner module, the (European Space Agency's) Columbus lab, up is a very, very significant thing. The station astronauts then will move Harmony and its shuttle docking port to the front end of Destiny and stage a series of spacewalks to route power and cooling to the new module.That will set the stage for the long-awaited December launch of the Columbus research module, which will be attached to Harmony's starboard port. Credit: NASA/JPLOn May 27, Cassini's flight computer fired the craft's main engine for six minutes and two seconds, setting up a June 11 flyby of Phoebe and fine-tuning the craft's trajectory for the all-important Saturn Orbit Insertion burn the night of June 30. Trajectory Correction Maneuver 20 was a relatively short, but critical rocket firing because it marked the first use of the main engine system since the Deep Space Maneuver back in 1998. To everyone's relief, TCM-20 came off without a hitch. The helium latch valve opened 70 seconds before ignition and the leaky regulator worked as required to maintain the proper pressure. "We've got a real nice propulsion system," said lead propulsion engineer Todd Barber. "It's a plumber's nightmare, there are so many valves and alternate paths and contingency paths available that basically, we're able to handle a lot of anomalies. And the regulator leak we saw was right after launch and we've been able to accommodate that with the way we time the opening of valves, etc." Even so, Barber will feel much better after Cassini successfully brakes into orbit. "It's been a long time coming and the hopes and dreams of thousands of engineers are resting on that one evening. When we get the signal back is when we'll all go take a deep breath. Hold your ears, because they might pop." To get into the desired orbit around Saturn, Cassini's main engine must fire for 96.4 minutes beginning at 10:35:42 p.m. EDT on June 30 (0235:42 GMT July 1). An underburn, or early cutoff, could doom the mission. Rocket Engine Assembly A - REA-A - must fire for more than 85 minutes to put Cassini into any kind of usable orbit. Asked what keeps him awake at night, program manager Bob Mitchell gave the obvious answer. "In general, just worrying that SOI is going to work," he said in an interview. "The confidence that it will is very high, just based on all of the testing, all the elaborate work that we have put into this, as well as our experience with the spacecraft to date. We've done 15 or 16 maneuvers using the main engine ... and so we have every reason to believe this thing is going to work just fine." But, he added, "the software the thing flies is all complex and I just worry about what bugs are still in there. I think it must be inevitable that there are still bugs in there for something this complex. We've tested it extensively, we have a test bed here in the basement of our building that is a quite high fidelity spacecraft simulator and the sequences have been run through there many, many times. We have injected faults, we've had various components break, where we simulated a break in the test bed and looked to see what response we got. And at the moment, everything works. Cassini first must avoid any crippling debris impacts when it crosses the ring plane between the F and G rings, moving from the lower side of the rings to the upper side as viewed from Earth. Pioneers 10 and 11, along with Voyager 2, flew through the gap with no problems but Cassini flight planners are taking no chances. Before traversing the ring plane, the spacecraft will be oriented with its high-gain dish antenna facing the direction of travel to act as a shield. Voyager 2 went through outer edge of the G ring and its instruments recorded "lots of evidence of micrometeoroid hits when going through, but nothing serious," said Voyager veteran Torrence Johnson, a Cassini imaging team member and chief scientist for the Galileo mission. "So we have that maneuvering to do and then there's the fact that the place is just a junky system," he said in an interview. "We're going in close, we're skimming right over the rings, everybody thinks we've modeled all this right and we're being reasonably cautious. But I told some of the guys early on, if they're going to be scared of ring particles they ought to remember John Paul Jones' letter to Congress, 'give me a fast ship for I intend to sail in harm's way.' "I don't think anybody's real complacent about this thing," Johnson said. "I think we've done everything we can to make sure we don't have any human or systems screw ups, but nature can still get you." Jerry Jones, Cassini's chief navigator, said flying through the ring plane relatively close to Saturn will save propellant and makes the rocket firing more efficient. "But the real clincher, given all that, is the science in that close. We're going to be sitting there looking right down on those rings." "We've got one class-A camera on this spacecraft," he said in an interview. "It's a beautiful telescope, it has great resolution, very sharp edges and for optical navigation, I'm just pleased as punch. ... The science opportunity going over the rings should be just fantastic, to say nothing of showing the public what they've paid for." Once safely through the ring plane, Cassini will re-orient itself once again, swapping ends to put the main engine forward for the SOI burn. NASA originally planned to carry out the rocket firing "in the blind," with Cassini focusing on science observations while the engine put on the brakes. But in the wake of back-to-back Mars mission failures in 1999, NASA management ordered engineers to figure out a way for Cassini to provide at least some information about the start of the burn, its progress and its termination. We could have pointed the high-gain antenna to Earth during the whole burn and have telemetry but there was a large delta V (fuel) penalty to do so. So the plan is to switch to a low gain antenna and that will allow us to maintain Doppler during the burn." While no actual data will be transmitted to Earth, analysis of the Doppler shift of a carrier signal from the spacecraft will tell engineers when the burn started, the precise deceleration it produces and when it stops. "There were two key things we wanted to be sure we could differentiate between," Mitchell said. "One was in the event we just lost it entirely and never saw it again, we wanted to be able to differentiate between whether we had a problem going through the ring plane or whether we did that successfully and had a problem during the course of the burn itself. So with the data we have, we will know that quite well." After re-orienting itself for SOI, Cassini will begin transmitting a carrier signal. Six minutes later, the burn will begin, showing up on computer screens at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a change in the slope of the carrier frequency. Thirty minutes later, the signal is expected to fade out for 25 minutes or so as Cassini passes behind Saturn's A ring as viewed from Earth. Engineers then expect six minutes of carrier through the Cassini division before another 28-minute communications blackout while the spacecraft passes behind the broad B ring. Closest approach to Saturn - 12,400 miles from the planet's cloud tops - is expected at 12:03 a.m. EDT (0403 GMT) July 1, nine minutes before the SOI burn comes to an end. The first images and other data from the orbit insertion maneuver are expected around 8:39 a.m. EDT (1239 GMT). Here is an edited timeline of critical events in the SOI maneuver for the evening of June 30 through the morning of July 1 (all times in EDT): "We turn off of Earth line shortly prior to the ring plane crossing," Mitchell explained. "We turn to point the high-gain antenna in the direction we need to be in to shield the rest of the spacecraft and then there's a period of about an hour where we don't have any contact. "Then when we turn back to go to the burn attitude, at about the time we get to that attitude, which is six minutes prior to the burn start, we will crank up a signal that comes from one of the low gain antennas. There's no telemetry, it's just a carrier. "But that carrier will allow us to get Doppler and that'll tell us if the spacecraft is operating fine and has not had any safing events. And then during the course of the burn, that Doppler will let us see quite accurately what the acceleration levels are. So if the system is performing nominally or over performing or under performing, the Doppler will show that very well." The day after orbit insertion, Cassini will pass within 205,000 miles of Titan, the first official Titan encounter of the mission and one that could prove, one way or the other, whether the spacecraft's cameras will be able to penetrate the hazy atmosphere as scientists hope. Between July 4 and 11, Cassini will be out of contact with Earth as Saturn passes behind the sun. The SOI sequence will end on July 30 as tour sequence No. 3 begins. Sometime around Aug. 23, Cassini's main engine is scheduled to fire in what will be the last fully helium-regulated burn of the mission: a 51-minute maneuver that will change the spacecraft's velocity by 877 mph. The Perigee Raise Maneuver, or PRM, will raise the low point of Cassini's orbit and set up the first close flyby of Titan in October. After another flyby in December, the Huygens probe will be released for atmospheric entry during the mission's third Titan encounter in January. A critical sequence is one that simply must execute properly to ensure mission success. The launch to Venus was one such sequence and the only other one is the Huygens data relay sequence. SOI is "the only maneuver that we will do throughout the entire course of the mission where we just absolutely have to do this burn right now," Mitchell said at a news briefing. "If this burn doesn't work, then we would have a Saturn flyby and that's not what we're here about. So we have designed what we refer to as a critical sequence where no matter what fault might occur, the spacecraft will not let the burn halt. Now in some modes it will stop the burn, swap to the other engine and then continue on with the burn. But the burn will continue even in the presence of faults." During normal operations, a problem with a spacecraft system would trigger fault-protection software that would shut down unnecessary activity, a condition known as safe mode. There are numerous variations, depending on the nature and timing of the fault and whether the spacecraft still knows its orientation in space. The end result, however, is the same: Cassini shuts down, finds the sun (Earth will never be more than six degrees away), switches to low-data-rate communications and awaits instructions from Earth. Because of Saturn's great distance and the slow-speed radio link used in safe mode, engineers would need at least 48 hours to restore Cassini to normal operations. Such a fault during the SOI maneuver would shut the main engine down, interrupting the all-important rocket firing and possibly dooming the mission. But in critical sequence mode, that will not be allowed to happen. "In critical mode, if the spacecraft detects a fault - we get a glint in the eye of the star scanner or the thrusters don't like what they're doing or a piece of hardware doesn't work right - the spacecraft will detect a fault," said Julie Webster, lead spacecraft engineer. "The sequence will halt and the spacecraft is allowed through its autonomous fault protection to go off and fix the fault. "And then it will come back and say I've detected a fault, I've fixed the fault. And then it'll come back and say OK, critical sequence, you can restart. And the critical sequence will say Oh, but I've gotta remember where I was. We have what we call a mark and rollback strategy. So it'll roll back to the last good mark point and it will resend all the commands necessary to execute the next states that it needs to be in. It'll recommend all of those and continue on. And so, if there's a fault anytime during the critical sequence, it'll stop, halt, detect the fault, correct the fault and then restart the sequence." That's where Cassini's second main engine comes in. If a fault of any kind interrupts the SOI sequence, the computer will fire up Rocket Engine Assembly B and continue the burn. Cassini's two engines are seen in this pre-launch photo. Credit: NASA/JPL"In the burn, we have already disabled any fault protection activity that's not necessary to complete the burn," Webster said. "So we've got fault monitors, say, on the CDS (command and data system) computer and on the radio. Well, the radio's not necessary to complete a burn. Neither is the CDS, ironically, because the attitude and articulation control system also has its own computer and once the CDS has told it to go do a burn, it takes over and says I don't need you anymore, I'll complete this burn and I'll let you know when I'm done. So only the fault protection that's necessary to complete the burn is active. "It would detect a fault in where it's pointing or the propulsion system wasn't acting right, maybe under thrusting or over thrusting. If there's a fault during the burn, then we terminate the burn. We try to fix the fault and then we mark and roll back, pick up where we did, restart but we're going to restart on the second engine. It takes at least two hours to cool down one engine. So 10 minutes later, we can restart on engine B and minimize our overall cost." But any safe mode that would necessitate firing REA-B also would terminate priceless SOI science operations, a small price to pay if survival of the mission is at stake. Cassini has a seven-hour window in which to complete the SOI maneuver and "as long as we got the correct amount of burn at any time in that seven-hour period, we would get into orbit," Webster said. "We might not like the orbit, but we'd get into orbit." While outwardly confident, many project officials are naturally anxious going into the make-or-break maneuver. But not Carolyn Porco. To her, the real issue is collecting the science required to meet Cassini's enormously challenging objectives. "Everything's working very well. Cassini is a very robust spacecraft, the instruments are working very well and I have personally no worries about Saturn orbit insertion at all," she said. "That's not what worries me about Cassini. What worries me about Cassini is the magnitude of the job. It's absolutely enormous. "What needs to be conveyed to people is the magnitude of this mission. It is not a Discovery-class mission. The breadth of its scientific objectives is tremendous. What we are going to do at Saturn will ultimately reach well beyond Saturn itself. It will teach us about the behavior of disk systems all throughout the universe. The processes going on in the disks of material from which planets are forming around other stars, it will tell us about what's going on in spiral galaxies, because the kind of things we find in Saturn's rings are directly applicable to what we find in galaxies. "The study of Titan, it's the place to go in the solar system to find a body that is the most Earth-like. And so what we find at Titan will inform us about many aspects of the Earth and the behavior of its atmosphere, possibly processes that were part of the run up to the origin of life on Earth. These are the sharpest views of Iapetus from Cassini so far, and they represent better resolution than the best images of this moon achieved by NASA's Voyager spacecraft. Images obtained using ultraviolet (centered at 338 nanometers), green (568 nanometers) and infrared (930 nanometers) filters were combined to produce the enhanced color views at left and center; the image at the right was obtained in visible white light. The images on the bottom row are identical to those on top, with the addition of an overlying coordinate grid. These views show parts of the moon's anti-Saturn side--the side that faces away from the ringed planet--which will not be imaged again by Cassini until Sept., 2007. In the central view, part of the moon's eastern edge was not imaged and appears to be cut off. With a diameter of 1,436 kilometers (892 miles), Iapetus is Saturn's third largest moon. It is famous for the dramatic contrasts in brightness on its surface--the leading hemisphere is as dark as a freshly-tarred street, and the trailing hemisphere and poles almost as bright as snow. Many impact craters can be seen in the bright terrain and in the transition zone between bright and dark, and for the first time in parts of the dark terrain. Also visible is a line of mountains that appear as a string of bright dots in the two color images at left, and on the eastern limb in the image at right. These mountains were originally detected in Voyager images, and might compete in height with the tallest mountains on Earth, Jupiter's moon Io and possibly even Mars. Further observations will be required to precisely determine their heights. Interestingly, the line of peaks is aligned remarkably close to the equator of Iapetus. The large circular feature rotating into view in the southern hemisphere is probably an impact structure with a diameter of more than 400 kilometers (250 miles), and was first seen in low-resolution Cassini images just two months earlier. Theses images were taken with the Cassini spacecraft narrow angle camera between Oct, 15 and 20, 2004, at distances of 1.2, 1.1 and 1.3 million kilometers (746,000, 684,000 and 808,000 miles) from Iapetus, respectively. The Sun-Iapetus-spacecraft, or phase, angle changes from 88 to 144 degrees across the three images. The image scale is approximately 7 kilometers (4.5 miles) per pixel. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. Successful reception of science data capped a morning of high dramaand ended any uncertainty that Europe had achieved one of its mostimpressive engineering and scientific triumphs."All instruments are on," a flight controller told the Huygens team.Mission managers already knew Cassini had survived its hellish plungeinto Titan's atmosphere and had made it to the moon's surface because of anunimaginably faint carrier signal that was detected by a network ofEarth-based radio telescopes. The signal, some 50 quadrillion times weakerthan a typical FM radio signal in a car radio, proved Huygens had survivedentry, deployed its main parachute and activated critical subsystems. Thesignal lasted more than two hours after the predicted landing, but it didnot carry any scientific data. It was merely a tone and while it showed thecraft was alive, it didn't prove whether it had accomplished its scientificobjectives.But the European spacecraft apparently worked as advertised and right onschedule, after Cassini dropped below Titan's horizon, the NASA mothershipturned back toward Earth and began transmitting data from Huygens' suite ofsix instruments."So the morning was good. The afternoon is better," Dordain said at anews conference. "This morning, we had an engineering success and we can saythis afternoon that we also have a scientific success. We are the firstvisitors to Titan and the scientific data we are collecting now shall unveilthe secrets of this new world."It will take several hours for mission scientists and engineers toextract and stitch together pictures from the data stream, but the firstpanoramic views showing the surface of Titan as Huygens descended throughits hazy atmosphere may be available between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m."The torch has been handed off from the engineers ... who've done theirjob of delivering the probe and delivering the data back," said DavidSouthwood, European Space Agency science director. "Now the scientists startwork. We're going to be working, I think, very hard in the next hours anddays but in fact, this data is data for posterity."This is a historic event. I don't think it's likely in the lifetime ofanyone in this room that we will repeat a landing on Titan. so this is thedata, it's for posterity, it's for mankind. But it's got to be unraveled,it's got to be put together and then scientists, being scientists, are goingto argue about what it means as we piece together our place in the universeand how we came to be. I think this is a very major step forward. But it'sonly the beginning for our science teams."NASA science chief Al Diaz choked back tears as he called the probemission "a tremendous success.""This really is another first," he said. "There will only be a firstsuccessful landing on Titan and this was it. The European Space Agencydeserves a tremendous amount of credit. We're glad we could have been apartner."Claudio Sollazzo, ESA's Huygens operations manager, said engineers wereinvestigating the apparent loss of data from one of two channels, or chains,of telemetry from Huygens. But he said the spacecraft was fully redundantand that "we can ensure that so far, on chain B, we see everything wentwell.""The probe went through the entry phase and the (main) parachute wasdeployed essentially at the time we predicted," he said. "We are anxious tosee what we call the history data, the telemetry that was recorded on boardthe probe before even the back cover came off so we can reconstruct how theprobe entered the atmosphere. This is very important information for thescientists to know how the higher atmospheric layers are. it is also veryimportant for the engineering community."Data on chain B showed "the batteries are OK, the computers worked asexpected, the software shows healthy status and instrument status as far aswe could receive ... were nominal," Sollazzo said. "The internal temperatureof the probe was about 25 degrees centigrade. So ... our instruments areworking at a very comfortable temperature."One of Huygens' six experiments, the Doppler Wind Experiment, relied inpart on chain A of the probe's communications system. It was designed tomeasure wind speeds by detecting subtle changes in the frequency of radiotransmissions as th craft is blown this way or that. If chain A did notwork, scientists will lose measurements of that shift between Huygens andCassini. The main difference in this procedure from previous checkouts was that there was a test of the Master Timer Unit (MTU). Because Huygens will spend three weeks coasting towards Titan following separation from the Cassini orbiter, its systems and instruments are powered down. The MTU is the 'triple-redundant' alarm-clock that has the most important job of waking up Huygens a few hours before its entry into Titan's atmosphere. The checkout also included some specific payload activities required to configure the Huygens instruments before separation. The procedure was carried out live, with Cassini transmitting the data to Earth in real-time. However the data arrived on Earth with an 80-minute delay as this is the time taken for light, and therefore radio signals, to travel the distance between Saturn and Earth. At the equator terrains are uniformly covered with a dark mantle of material that has a reflectivity of about 4 percent. At latitudes toward the pole of about 40 degrees, the dark deposits become patchy and diffuse as the surface transitions to a much brighter, icy terrain near the pole. The brightest icy materials exhibit visual reflectivity over 60 percent. Superimposed on the bright terrain is a subtle, ghostly pattern of crudely parallel, north-south trending wispy streaks. The streaks, which were discovered during this flyby of Iapetus, are typically a few kilometers wide and sometimes tens of kilometers long. Their appearance and orientation may be connected with the emplacement of dark materials that cover Cassini Regio. The dark materials might represent the gradual accumulation of dark debris falling from space, or alternatively, may represent fallout from plume-style eruptions that may have accompanied the formation of Iapetus's enigmatic equatorial ridge. Also seen in this mosaic are conspicuous, north-facing bright crater walls. An example can be seen in the upper left where the bright, 4-kilometer-high (2.5 miles) walls of a 70 kilometer (44 mile) central-peak crater lies. The bright crater walls are often higher in brightness than the corresponding south-facing walls of the same crater. They are vaguely reminiscent of bright north-facing crater walls that were discovered by NASA's Voyager and Galileo spacecraft in craters near the poles of the Jovian satellites Callisto and Ganymede. In the case of the Jovian satellites, cold-trapping of frosts on north-facing slopes and sublimation of ices from south-facing slopes are thought to produce the north-south asymmetries in crater wall brightness. However, the occurrence of some young-appearing craters on Iapetus that have bright north-facing and dark south-facing slopes, and the pattern of streaks near the north pole of Iapetus suggests that another mechanism may be responsible for the crater wall brightness asymmetries on Iapetus. One possibility is that the south-facing slopes may be stained by the same process that emplaced the low brightness coating throughout the region. In this case, the north-pointing scarps might be bright because they face away and are shielded from the putative falling spray of dark materials. Bright south-facing slopes would exist primarily on young craters that have not been exposed to the darkening agent long enough to be stained. The image was obtained in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow angle camera on Dec. 31, 2004, at a distance of about 123,370 kilometers (76,658 miles) from Iapetus and at a Sun-Iapetus-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 93 degrees. Resolution achieved in the original image was 732 meters (2,401 feet) per pixel. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The MIMI experiment, an international team effort led by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), Laurel, Md., includes three distinct sensors that will profile the environment of charged particles at Saturn and obtain the first visible, global images of Saturn's magnetosphere."Until now, measuring a planet's magnetic field and charged particle environment - its magnetosphere - has been difficult," says Dr. Stamatios (Tom) Krimigis, of APL, MIMI principal investigator. "A spacecraft can measure it at one point when it flies past a planet, but you don't know what's happening somewhere else and you never get the entire picture. With our instrument, and from orbit around the planet, we'll be able to look at the changing patterns and dynamics of Saturn's space weather - actually see how it reacts to the solar wind over time and how it affects the surfaces and atmospheres of the moons embedded in the magnetosphere."MIMI's sensors combine three critical measurements to create that picture. Its high-energy particle detector (developed by APL, the Max Plank Institute and a number of co-investigator institutions) looks at the distribution and strength of energetic ions and electrons near the spacecraft. Its charge-energy mass spectrometer (built by the University of Maryland, College Park) measures the charge and determines the elemental composition of these particles.MIMI's ion and neutral camera takes a wider approach, using an APL-developed technique known as energetic neutral atom imaging to provide a global view of the entire magnetosphere - a deep-space mission first. The camera detects the "glow" of energized particles trapped in the planet's magnetic field, which will allow scientists to make three-dimensional images of the compression and expansion of Saturn's magnetosphere as it's buffeted by the solar wind, or as it sends streams of particles toward the surfaces of Titan and other nearby satellites."Magnetospheres can change dramatically over a matter of hours to days, so flybys such as the Voyager spacecrafts' only yield a snapshot in time and space," says MIMI Instrument Scientist Dr. Donald Mitchell, of APL. "With Cassini we're going to get years and years of nearly continuous data, which will give us a much more complete understanding of this complex system. We'll be able to watch the whole dynamic between the sun and Saturn, and the planet and its moons."The camera was pointed toward Saturn's magnetosphere four months ago and has already collected impressive data, Mitchell says. MIMI had a successful test run during Cassini's flight past Jupiter in late 2000-early 2001, providing scientists with never-before-seen images of the giant planet's magnetosphere and underlying dynamics; a huge nebula of particles - spewed from volcanoes on the moon Io - enveloping Jupiter and extending some 22 million kilometers (13 million miles) past the planet; and a large and surprisingly dense gas cloud sharing an orbit with Jupiter's icy moon Europa.While the mission at Saturn is just beginning, Krimigis expects MIMI's data will eventually give scientists a better understanding of the space environment closer to home."Planetary magnetic fields have a lot in common, even if the planets themselves are very different," he says. "We hope to find some of the characteristics that affect both the Earth and Saturn, and feed this knowledge back into the models we have for space weather at Earth. Then we can devise accurate space weather forecasts that give advance warning of the electromagnetic storms that affect our satellites, communications, power grids and other technological systems."Including the APL-built MIMI, half of Cassini's instruments are designed to investigate the space environments around Saturn and its moons.
