In this Cassini image the moon displays what may be a relatively fresh, bright, rayed crater near Rhea's eastern limb. Rhea is 1,528 kilometers (949 miles) across.    Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science InstituteDownload larger image version This view is centered on the side of Rhea that faces away from Saturn as the moon orbits. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow angle camera on Nov. 10, 2004, at a distance of 3.6 million kilometers (2.2 million miles) from Rhea and at a Sun-Rhea-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 86 degrees. Visible in this image are: Mimas (398 kilometers, or 247 miles across) brightest and above center; Janus (181 kilometers, or 112 miles across) second brightest at upper left; and Prometheus (102 kilometers, or 63 miles across) just above the main rings at upper left.     Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science InstituteDownload larger image version The normally bright B ring appears very dark from this vantage point. Regions with smaller concentrations of particles, such as the Cassini division (bright near center) transmit more sunlight and thus are brighter. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft wide angle camera at a distance of 757,000 kilometers (470,000miles) from Saturn. The image scale is about 42 kilometers (26 miles) per pixel. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Encke Gap is a small division near the outer edge of Saturn's rings that is about 300 kilometers (190 miles) wide. The tiny moon Pan (20 kilometers, or 12 miles across) orbits within the gap and maintains it. This image is different from previous Titan images by Cassini because it was taken through a special filter, called a polarizer, which is designed to see through the atmosphere to the surface. The superimposed coordinate system grid in the accompanying image at right illustrates the geographical regions of the moon that are illuminated and visible, as well as the orientation of Titan. North is up and rotated 25 degrees to the left. The yellow curve marks the position of the boundary between day and night on Titan. This image shows about one quarter of Titan's surface, from 0 to 70 degrees West longitude, and just barely overlaps part of the surface shown in the previous Titan image release. Most of the visible surface in this image has not yet been shown in any Cassini image. The image was obtained with the narrow angle camera on June 14, 2004, at a phase, or Sun-Titan-spacecraft, angle of 61 degrees and at a distance of 10.4 million kilometers (6.5 million miles) from Titan. The image scale is 62 kilometers (39 miles) per pixel. The image was magnified by a factor of two using a linear interpolation scheme. No further processing to remove the effects of the overlying atmosphere has been performed. The observed brightness variations are real, on scales of one hundred kilometers or less. The image was obtained in the near-infrared (centered at 938 nanometers) through a polarizing filter. The combination was designed to reduce the obscuration by atmospheric haze. The haze is more transparent at 938 nanometers than at shorter wavelengths, and light of 938 nanometers wavelength is not absorbed by methane gas in Titan's atmosphere. Light at this wavelength consequently samples the surface, and the polarizer blocks out light scattered mainly by the haze. This is similar to the way a polarizer, put on the front of a lens of a hand-held camera, makes distant objects more clear on Earth. Cassini will conduct a critical 96-minute burn before going into orbit around Saturn on June 30 (July 1 Universal Time), with its first scheduled flyby of Titan on July 2.The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. Iapetus is one of the moons of Saturn.     Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science InstituteDownload larger image version The landslide material appears to have collapsed from a scarp 15 kilometers high (9 miles) that forms the rim of an ancient 600 kilometer (375 mile) impact basin. Unconsolidated rubble from the landslide extends halfway across a conspicuous, 120-kilometer diameter (75-mile) flat-floored impact crater that lies just inside the basin scarp. Landslides are common geological phenomena on many planetary bodies, including Earth and Mars. The appearance of this landslide on an icy satellite with low-brightness cratered terrain is reminiscent of landslide features that were observed during NASA's Galileo mission on the Jovian satellite Callisto. The fact that the Iapetus landslide traveled many kilometers from the basin scarp could indicate that the surface material is very fine-grained, and perhaps was fluffed by mechanical forces that allowed the landslide debris to flow extended distances. In this view, north is to the left of the picture and solar illumination is from the bottom of the frame. The image was obtained in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow angle camera on Dec. 31, 2004, at a distance of about 123,400 kilometers (76,677 miles) from Iapetus and at a Sun-Iapetus-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 78 degrees. Resolution achieved in the original image was 740 meters (2,428 feet) per pixel. The image has been contrast-enhanced and magnified by a factor of two to aid visibility. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. This natural color view was seen by the spacecraft about one day after closest approach. The slight bluish glow of Titan's haze is visible along the limb.    Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science InstituteDownload a larger version of image The superimposed coordinate system grid in the accompanying image at right illustrates the geographical regions of the moon that are illuminated and visible, as well as the orientation of Titan -- lines of longitude converge on the South Pole near the moon's eastern limb. The yellow curve marks the position of the boundary between day and night on Titan. Images taken through blue, green and red filters were combined to create this natural color view. The images were obtained with the Cassini spacecraft wide angle camera on July 3, 2004, from a distance of about 790,000 kilometers (491,000 miles) from Titan and at a Sun-Titan-spacecraft, or phase angle of 115 degrees. Brightness variations across the surface and bright clouds near the south pole are easily seen. The images that comprise the mosaic have been processed to reduce the effects of the atmosphere and to sharpen surface features. The mosaic has been trimmed to show only the illuminated surface and not the atmosphere above the edge of the moon. The Sun was behind Cassini so nearly the full disc is illuminated. Pixels scales of the composite images vary from 2 to 4 kilometers per pixel (1.2 to 2.5 miles per pixel). Surface features are best seen near the center of the disc, where the spacecraft is looking directly downwards; the contrast becomes progressively lower and surface features become fuzzier towards the outside, where the spacecraft is peering through haze, a circumstance that washes out surface features. The brighter region on the right side and equatorial region is named Xanadu Regio. Scientists are actively debating what processes may have created the bizarre surface brightness patterns seen here. The images hint at a young surface with, no obvious craters. However, the exact nature of that activity, whether tectonic, wind-blown, fluvial, marine, or volcanic is still to be determined. The images comprising this mosaic were acquired from distances ranging from 650,000 kilometers (400,000 miles) to 300,000 kilometers (200,000 miles). Nike Free Run 5.0 V4 STORY WRITTEN FOR  & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: June 12, 2004    Cassini fires its engine to enter orbit around Saturn as illustrated in this artist's concept. Credit: NASA/JPLOn May 27, Cassini's flight computer fired the craft's main engine for six minutes and two seconds, setting up a June 11 flyby of Phoebe and fine-tuning the craft's trajectory for the all-important Saturn Orbit Insertion burn the night of June 30.   Trajectory Correction Maneuver 20 was a relatively short, but critical rocket firing because it marked the first use of the main engine system since the Deep Space Maneuver back in 1998. To everyone's relief, TCM-20 came off without a hitch. The helium latch valve opened 70 seconds before ignition and the leaky regulator worked as required to maintain the proper pressure.   "We've got a real nice propulsion system," said lead propulsion engineer Todd Barber. "It's a plumber's nightmare, there are so many valves and alternate paths and contingency paths available that basically, we're able to handle a lot of anomalies. And the regulator leak we saw was right after launch and we've been able to accommodate that with the way we time the opening of valves, etc."   Even so, Barber will feel much better after Cassini successfully brakes into orbit. "It's been a long time coming and the hopes and dreams of thousands of engineers are resting on that one evening. When we get the signal back is when we'll all go take a deep breath. Hold your ears, because they might pop."   To get into the desired orbit around Saturn, Cassini's main engine must fire for 96.4 minutes beginning at 10:35:42 p.m. EDT on June 30 (0235:42 GMT July 1). An underburn, or early cutoff, could doom the mission. Rocket Engine Assembly A - REA-A - must fire for more than 85 minutes to put Cassini into any kind of usable orbit. Asked what keeps him awake at night, program manager Bob Mitchell gave the obvious answer.   "In general, just worrying that SOI is going to work," he said in an interview. "The confidence that it will is very high, just based on all of the testing, all the elaborate work that we have put into this, as well as our experience with the spacecraft to date. We've done 15 or 16 maneuvers using the main engine ... and so we have every reason to believe this thing is going to work just fine."   But, he added, "the software the thing flies is all complex and I just worry about what bugs are still in there. I think it must be inevitable that there are still bugs in there for something this complex. We've tested it extensively, we have a test bed here in the basement of our building that is a quite high fidelity spacecraft simulator and the sequences have been run through there many, many times. We have injected faults, we've had various components break, where we simulated a break in the test bed and looked to see what response we got. And at the moment, everything works. All the tests that we've done, all the simulations indicate that everything is just fine."    This graphic shows the ring plane crossing and orbit insertion burn. Credit: NASA/JPLThe maneuver has little margin for error. Cassini first must avoid any crippling debris impacts when it crosses the ring plane between the F and G rings, moving from the lower side of the rings to the upper side as viewed from Earth.   Pioneers 10 and 11, along with Voyager 2, flew through the gap with no problems but Cassini flight planners are taking no chances. Before traversing the ring plane, the spacecraft will be oriented with its high-gain dish antenna facing the direction of travel to act as a shield.   Voyager 2 went through outer edge of the G ring and its instruments recorded "lots of evidence of micrometeoroid hits when going through, but nothing serious," said Voyager veteran Torrence Johnson, a Cassini imaging team member and chief scientist for the Galileo mission.   "So we have that maneuvering to do and then there's the fact that the place is just a junky system," he said in an interview. "We're going in close, we're skimming right over the rings, everybody thinks we've modeled all this right and we're being reasonably cautious. But I told some of the guys early on, if they're going to be scared of ring particles they ought to remember John Paul Jones' letter to Congress, 'give me a fast ship for I intend to sail in harm's way.'   "I don't think anybody's real complacent about this thing," Johnson said. "I think we've done everything we can to make sure we don't have any human or systems screw ups, but nature can still get you."   Jerry Jones, Cassini's chief navigator, said flying through the ring plane relatively close to Saturn will save propellant and makes the rocket firing more efficient. "But the real clincher, given all that, is the science in that close. We're going to be sitting there looking right down on those rings."   "We've got one class-A camera on this spacecraft," he said in an interview. "It's a beautiful telescope, it has great resolution, very sharp edges and for optical navigation, I'm just pleased as punch. ... The science opportunity going over the rings should be just fantastic, to say nothing of showing the public what they've paid for."   Once safely through the ring plane, Cassini will re-orient itself once again, swapping ends to put the main engine forward for the SOI burn. NASA originally planned to carry out the rocket firing "in the blind," with Cassini focusing on science observations while the engine put on the brakes. But in the wake of back-to-back Mars mission failures in 1999, NASA management ordered engineers to figure out a way for Cassini to provide at least some information about the start of the burn, its progress and its termination.    This graphic shows Cassini's track as it enters orbit around Saturn. Credit: NASA/JPL"So we went back and scrambled then," Barber said. "We had a compromise solution. We could have pointed the high-gain antenna to Earth during the whole burn and have telemetry but there was a large delta V (fuel) penalty to do so. So the plan is to switch to a low gain antenna and that will allow us to maintain Doppler during the burn."   While no actual data will be transmitted to Earth, analysis of the Doppler shift of a carrier signal from the spacecraft will tell engineers when the burn started, the precise deceleration it produces and when it stops.   "There were two key things we wanted to be sure we could differentiate between," Mitchell said. "One was in the event we just lost it entirely and never saw it again, we wanted to be able to differentiate between whether we had a problem going through the ring plane or whether we did that successfully and had a problem during the course of the burn itself. So with the data we have, we will know that quite well."   After re-orienting itself for SOI, Cassini will begin transmitting a carrier signal. Six minutes later, the burn will begin, showing up on computer screens at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a change in the slope of the carrier frequency. Thirty minutes later, the signal is expected to fade out for 25 minutes or so as Cassini passes behind Saturn's A ring as viewed from Earth.   Engineers then expect six minutes of carrier through the Cassini division before another 28-minute communications blackout while the spacecraft passes behind the broad B ring. Closest approach to Saturn - 12,400 miles from the planet's cloud tops - is expected at 12:03 a.m. EDT (0403 GMT) July 1, nine minutes before the SOI burn comes to an end. The first images and other data from the orbit insertion maneuver are expected around 8:39 a.m. EDT (1239 GMT).   Here is an edited timeline of critical events in the SOI maneuver for the evening of June 30 through the morning of July 1 (all times in EDT):    "We turn off of Earth line shortly prior to the ring plane crossing," Mitchell explained. "We turn to point the high-gain antenna in the direction we need to be in to shield the rest of the spacecraft and then there's a period of about an hour where we don't have any contact.   "Then when we turn back to go to the burn attitude, at about the time we get to that attitude, which is six minutes prior to the burn start, we will crank up a signal that comes from one of the low gain antennas. There's no telemetry, it's just a carrier.   "But that carrier will allow us to get Doppler and that'll tell us if the spacecraft is operating fine and has not had any safing events. And then during the course of the burn, that Doppler will let us see quite accurately what the acceleration levels are. So if the system is performing nominally or over performing or under performing, the Doppler will show that very well."   The day after orbit insertion, Cassini will pass within 205,000 miles of Titan, the first official Titan encounter of the mission and one that could prove, one way or the other, whether the spacecraft's cameras will be able to penetrate the hazy atmosphere as scientists hope. Between July 4 and 11, Cassini will be out of contact with Earth as Saturn passes behind the sun. The SOI sequence will end on July 30 as tour sequence No. 3 begins.   Sometime around Aug. 23, Cassini's main engine is scheduled to fire in what will be the last fully helium-regulated burn of the mission: a 51-minute maneuver that will change the spacecraft's velocity by 877 mph. The Perigee Raise Maneuver, or PRM, will raise the low point of Cassini's orbit and set up the first close flyby of Titan in October. After another flyby in December, the Huygens probe will be released for atmospheric entry during the mission's third Titan encounter in January.    Cassini's initial orbits around Saturn are illustrated in this graphic. Credit: NASA/JPLThe SOI maneuver is one of only three so-called "critical sequences" built into Cassini's mission software. A critical sequence is one that simply must execute properly to ensure mission success. The launch to Venus was one such sequence and the only other one is the Huygens data relay sequence.   SOI is "the only maneuver that we will do throughout the entire course of the mission where we just absolutely have to do this burn right now," Mitchell said at a news briefing. "If this burn doesn't work, then we would have a Saturn flyby and that's not what we're here about. So we have designed what we refer to as a critical sequence where no matter what fault might occur, the spacecraft will not let the burn halt. Now in some modes it will stop the burn, swap to the other engine and then continue on with the burn. But the burn will continue even in the presence of faults."   During normal operations, a problem with a spacecraft system would trigger fault-protection software that would shut down unnecessary activity, a condition known as safe mode. There are numerous variations, depending on the nature and timing of the fault and whether the spacecraft still knows its orientation in space. The end result, however, is the same: Cassini shuts down, finds the sun (Earth will never be more than six degrees away), switches to low-data-rate communications and awaits instructions from Earth.   Because of Saturn's great distance and the slow-speed radio link used in safe mode, engineers would need at least 48 hours to restore Cassini to normal operations. Such a fault during the SOI maneuver would shut the main engine down, interrupting the all-important rocket firing and possibly dooming the mission. But in critical sequence mode, that will not be allowed to happen.   "In critical mode, if the spacecraft detects a fault - we get a glint in the eye of the star scanner or the thrusters don't like what they're doing or a piece of hardware doesn't work right - the spacecraft will detect a fault," said Julie Webster, lead spacecraft engineer. "The sequence will halt and the spacecraft is allowed through its autonomous fault protection to go off and fix the fault.   "And then it will come back and say I've detected a fault, I've fixed the fault. And then it'll come back and say OK, critical sequence, you can restart. And the critical sequence will say Oh, but I've gotta remember where I was. We have what we call a mark and rollback strategy. So it'll roll back to the last good mark point and it will resend all the commands necessary to execute the next states that it needs to be in. It'll recommend all of those and continue on. And so, if there's a fault anytime during the critical sequence, it'll stop, halt, detect the fault, correct the fault and then restart the sequence."   That's where Cassini's second main engine comes in. If a fault of any kind interrupts the SOI sequence, the computer will fire up Rocket Engine Assembly B and continue the burn.    Cassini's two engines are seen in this pre-launch photo. Credit: NASA/JPL"In the burn, we have already disabled any fault protection activity that's not necessary to complete the burn," Webster said. "So we've got fault monitors, say, on the CDS (command and data system) computer and on the radio. Well, the radio's not necessary to complete a burn. Neither is the CDS, ironically, because the attitude and articulation control system also has its own computer and once the CDS has told it to go do a burn, it takes over and says I don't need you anymore, I'll complete this burn and I'll let you know when I'm done. So only the fault protection that's necessary to complete the burn is active.   "It would detect a fault in where it's pointing or the propulsion system wasn't acting right, maybe under thrusting or over thrusting. If there's a fault during the burn, then we terminate the burn. We try to fix the fault and then we mark and roll back, pick up where we did, restart but we're going to restart on the second engine. It takes at least two hours to cool down one engine. So 10 minutes later, we can restart on engine B and minimize our overall cost."   But any safe mode that would necessitate firing REA-B also would terminate priceless SOI science operations, a small price to pay if survival of the mission is at stake. Cassini has a seven-hour window in which to complete the SOI maneuver and "as long as we got the correct amount of burn at any time in that seven-hour period, we would get into orbit," Webster said. "We might not like the orbit, but we'd get into orbit."   While outwardly confident, many project officials are naturally anxious going into the make-or-break maneuver. But not Carolyn Porco. To her, the real issue is collecting the science required to meet Cassini's enormously challenging objectives.   "Everything's working very well. Cassini is a very robust spacecraft, the instruments are working very well and I have personally no worries about Saturn orbit insertion at all," she said. "That's not what worries me about Cassini. What worries me about Cassini is the magnitude of the job. It's absolutely enormous.   "What needs to be conveyed to people is the magnitude of this mission. It is not a Discovery-class mission. The breadth of its scientific objectives is tremendous. What we are going to do at Saturn will ultimately reach well beyond Saturn itself. It will teach us about the behavior of disk systems all throughout the universe. The processes going on in the disks of material from which planets are forming around other stars, it will tell us about what's going on in spiral galaxies, because the kind of things we find in Saturn's rings are directly applicable to what we find in galaxies.   "The study of Titan, it's the place to go in the solar system to find a body that is the most Earth-like. And so what we find at Titan will inform us about many aspects of the Earth and the behavior of its atmosphere, possibly processes that were part of the run up to the origin of life on Earth. On and on. It is really, truly the flagship mission of our time."MISSION PREVIEWStargaze II DVDThe Stargaze II DVD has arrived! (3min 14sec file)Saturn's moon Iapetus as you've never seen it      CASSINI PHOTO RELEASEPosted: December 8, 2004New details on Iapetus are illuminated by reflected light from Saturn in this revealing Cassini image. Never-before-seen features on the Saturn-facing part of Iapetus' bright trailing hemisphere are visible for the first time, including many dark spots, and a sharper view of a dark, circular structure that was first seen at very low resolution by NASA's Voyager 1 in 1980. Iapetus diameter is 1,436 kilometers (892 miles).     Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science InstituteThe image shows mainly the night side of Iapetus; part of the far brighter sunlit side appears at the right and is overexposed due to the long integration time of 180 seconds. Despite this long exposure time, almost no blurring due to the spacecraft's motion is apparent. This technique for imaging the night side of Iapetus will be used again during a flyby on Jan. 1, 2005, when Cassini will pass 13 times closer to the icy moon. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow angle camera on Oct. 22, 2004, at a distance of 1.6 million kilometers (994,000 miles) from Iapetus, and from a Sun-Iapetus-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 161 degrees. The view is centered on 0.4 degrees north latitude, 317 degrees west longitude on Iapetus. The image scale is 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles) per pixel.     Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science InstituteDownload larger image version IMAGE 2 These spectacular Cassini images of Saturn's moon Iapetus show an enticing world of contrasts. These are the sharpest views of Iapetus from Cassini so far, and they represent better resolution than the best images of this moon achieved by NASA's Voyager spacecraft. Images obtained using ultraviolet (centered at 338 nanometers), green (568 nanometers) and infrared (930 nanometers) filters were combined to produce the enhanced color views at left and center; the image at the right was obtained in visible white light. The images on the bottom row are identical to those on top, with the addition of an overlying coordinate grid. These views show parts of the moon's anti-Saturn side--the side that faces away from the ringed planet--which will not be imaged again by Cassini until Sept., 2007. In the central view, part of the moon's eastern edge was not imaged and appears to be cut off. With a diameter of 1,436 kilometers (892 miles), Iapetus is Saturn's third largest moon. It is famous for the dramatic contrasts in brightness on its surface--the leading hemisphere is as dark as a freshly-tarred street, and the trailing hemisphere and poles almost as bright as snow. Many impact craters can be seen in the bright terrain and in the transition zone between bright and dark, and for the first time in parts of the dark terrain. Also visible is a line of mountains that appear as a string of bright dots in the two color images at left, and on the eastern limb in the image at right. These mountains were originally detected in Voyager images, and might compete in height with the tallest mountains on Earth, Jupiter's moon Io and possibly even Mars. Further observations will be required to precisely determine their heights. Interestingly, the line of peaks is aligned remarkably close to the equator of Iapetus. The large circular feature rotating into view in the southern hemisphere is probably an impact structure with a diameter of more than 400 kilometers (250 miles), and was first seen in low-resolution Cassini images just two months earlier. Theses images were taken with the Cassini spacecraft narrow angle camera between Oct, 15 and 20, 2004, at distances of 1.2, 1.1 and 1.3 million kilometers (746,000, 684,000 and 808,000 miles) from Iapetus, respectively. The Sun-Iapetus-spacecraft, or phase, angle changes from 88 to 144 degrees across the three images. The image scale is approximately 7 kilometers (4.5 miles) per pixel. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras, were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute, Boulder, Colo. Nike Air Max 2013 Launch highlights from first Vandenberg's Delta 4-Heavy. Credit: ULAA new strategy, being employed to reduce the hydrogen flames generated during startup of the three Aerojet Rocketdyne RS-68 main engines, will see the triple-body rocket light one engine two seconds before the other two. Counting down to liftoff at 10:52 a.m. local  (1:52 p.m. EDT; 1752 GMT), the Terminal Countdown sequencer will take control at T-minus 10 seconds and the starboard engine begins to ignite at T-minus 7 seconds. Unburned hydrogen is released through the engine and hits the burnoff sparklers beneath the rocket, creating a dramatic fireball around the vehicle's base, something that has become a customary trademark for Delta 4 launches over the past decade. But the new staggered process is designed to lessen that pre-liftoff fire before the 23-story-tall Heavy takes to the sky. With the first engine running and working to aspirate the forthcoming hydrogen flame from the other two boosters, the center and port engines will begin their ignition process at T-minus 5 seconds and see a significant portion of the resulting fire drawn into launch table instead of rising up.Vandenberg's previous Heavy lifts off in 2011. Credit: Pat Corkery/United Launch AllianceThe six previous launches of Delta 4-Heavy rockets -- five from Cape Canaveral and one from Vandenberg -- commanded all three engines to ignite simultaneously. The earlier Vandenberg launch in 2011, however, saw the ignition plume catch external insulation on fire as the vehicle lifted off and cleared to the pad. The flames extinguished a few seconds later and the mission proceeded successfully. The staggered engine sequence is meant to prevent such a reoccurrence without altering the engines' operations during flight, providing a cleaner and less dramatic launch. The debut of this procedure on the East Coast will be made next year when a Heavy launches NASA's Orion deep-space capsule on a three-orbit shakedown cruise around the Earth. Each engine guzzles nearly a ton of propellants per second to produce 656,000 pounds of sea-level rated thrust. The upper stage, with its Aerojet Rocketdyne RL10B-2 engine, takes over about six minutes into flight.Wednesday's mission, flying southward from Vandenberg, will place a classified payload into polar orbit for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office, the agency responsible for operating the country's fleet for spy satellites. The Delta 4-Heavy is America's largest unmanned rocket currently in service, capable of lofting the biggest and heftiest cargos. The mammoth vehicle is created by taking three Common Booster Cores -- the liquid hydrogen-fueled motor that forms a Delta 4-Medium's first stage -- and strapping them together to form a triple-barrel rocket, and then adding an upper stage. The first West Coast Delta 4-Heavy at Vandenberg's SLC 6 in 2011. Credit: Pat Corkery/United Launch Alliance"There's nothing bigger that the United States launches -- period -- in any way, shape or form, and that is absolutely amazing," said Lt. Col. Jim Bodnar, commander of the 4th Space Launch Squadron at Vandenberg.A Heavy launching from Vandenberg is capable of putting school bus-sized reconnaissance observatories into polar orbit, a performance roughly comparable to the retired space shuttles and Titan 4 rockets. The target launch date for this mission, designated NROL-65, has remained unchanged for months, staying on schedule despite sequestration and personnel furloughs."I don't want to jinx myself, but it has been an extremely smooth flow," Bodnar said. "It is a testament to the work ULA does and that the 4th Space Launch Squadron oversees. I dare say this has been one of the smoothest flows that I've seen."A lengthy series of readiness reviews ranging from subsystems to the payload has been underway since last week. The assessments culminate with the final launch approval to be given Tuesday, Bodnar said."The launch business is probably one of the most risk-adverse businesses out there," Bodnar said. "The extra time the reviews take are well worth the cost because the alternative is unthinkable."Crews at the Space Launch Complex 6 pad, the site formerly envisioned for West Coast space shuttle missions, will retract the mobile assembly shelter to its launch position on Monday. The 9-million-pound structure provides environmentally-friendly working conditions at the pad, originally to avoid high winds during shuttle stacking operations. The 13-million-pound mobile service tower that provides all-level access to the rocket will be wheeled back Tuesday night ahead of the countdown.Clocks will start ticking at 4:52 a.m. local Wednesday, followed a short time later by fueling operations for the eight cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen tanks aboard the vehicle.A planned built-in hold is scheduled at T-minus 4 minutes and will last for 45 minutes, leading to liftoff at 10:52 a.m. local (1:52 p.m. EDT; 1752 GMT).It will be the 364th flight of a Delta rocket, the 24th for the Delta 4 family, the NRO's eighth use of the Delta 4 and ULA's 74th mission, the eighth just this year."Rarely do you see dry eyes when the rocket launches and you know that it's successful," Bodnar said. "The fact that we actually get to see the fruits of all of that labor is actually amazing. They're awe-inspiring."Final Shuttle Mission PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The crew emblem for the final space shuttle mission is now available in our store. But when we do it right, it's just a great feeling," said Dan Collins, Boeing's vice president of Delta programs. "Nobody has ever developed an engine like this and done it in the amount time that Rocketdyne did. This is a great success and really the heart and soul of Delta 4 and what we are going to build our future on as far as our propulsion system."Guzzling nearly a ton of propellants per second, the liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen-fed RS-68 engine will produce 656,000 pounds of sea-level rated thrust. "You have developed a system that is using 17 million horsepower and (the equivalent of) 11 Hoover Dams to go defeat gravity. Yeah, it's cool!"During the Delta 4 launch, the engine will fire for the first four minutes of flight. It will be running at a throttle setting of 101 percent until the final seconds when a throttle-down to 58 percent is started in preparation for shutdown.RS-68 built upon lessons of pastAlthough not directly derived from the space shuttle main engine (SSME), the RS-68 is comparable to that reusable, hydrogen-fueled engine developed by Rocketdyne in the 1970s."We've taken a lot of the good parts of the SSME," Collins said. "Then we've learned some of the lessons of operating that engine over the past two-and-a-half decades and really sat down with a clean sheet of paper and said 'if you were looking to take all of that experience and build something today, how would you go do it?' And that's what we came up with."Driving the design of the RS-68 is cost. Keeping the expenses of producing the engine as low as possible will reduce the overall ticket to fly a satellite atop the Delta 4."The RS-68 is the first rocket engine designed specifically for low cost (to provide) affordable space-lift and worldwide commercial competitiveness," said Bryon Wood, the vice president and general manager of Rocketdyne.Compared to the SSME, development time for the RS-68 was cut in half, the number of parts was reduced by 80 percent, the hand-touched labor reduced by 92 percent and non-recurring costs were cut by a factor of five."We've been able to get a lot of hand-work out of the RS-68 and replaced it with numerically-controlled machines. So instead of having a thrust chamber built up of a lot of tubes, we've machined this thing out of a solid piece of metal, which increases reliability," Collins said."A lot of those advancements help make the engine a more economical engine to build. So I really think it is a good balance of higher reliability, lower life-cycle cost and having the ability to all the development data and really have known this thing since inception gives us a whole lot of insight into the engine and what's going on with it."The pieces and partsThe engine has 11 major components, including the combustion chamber, single oxygen and single hydrogen turbopumps, gimbal bearing, injector, gas generator, heat exchanger and fuel exhaust duct. It stands 17 feet tall, has a bell-shaped nozzle with an 8-foot diameter and features a quadrapod thrust frame that mates the engine to the Common Booster Core first stage."It has a regeneratively-cooled main chamber, which provides for operation of the engine in a gas generator cycle which means it has a small combustion chamber that drives the turbines. We made efficient use of the gases to do that by providing roll-control for the gases that exit the hydrogen turbopump," Wood explained. All of the engine parts are delivered to NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi where Rocketdyne has set up shop to assemble RS-68s, check them out and then conduct test firings on the B-1 stand there. Once the acceptance testing is completed, the engines are shipped to Boeing's factory in Decatur, Alabama, for installation into the Delta 4 rockets.Put to the testOver the past four years, RS-68 engines have logged more than 20,000 seconds of firing time during development, including tests with a thrust level of 105 percent, four percent higher than planned for launches. Three specific engines have been fired over 20 times for nearly 4,000 seconds each.Flight engines are designed for eight starts and 1,200 seconds of burn time, well in excess of what is required. But the extra margin allows for acceptance testing and on-pad aborts without having to replace the engine. The RS-68 was certified for use on Delta 4 in late 2001."It was a very, very good program," Collins said of the development. "It was a program where we learned a lot. We had our ups and downs at times, but when the team got this engine right where they wanted it to be, the amount of seconds and amount of testing we were able to put on it really escalated. We got through a lot of good testing in 2001, really gave us high confidence on the RS-68.The particular engine for the first Delta 4 launch, number 20003, has undergone about 565 seconds of firing time during five tests, including the brief Flight Readiness Firing on launch pad 37B last month.Collins said the engine passed the FRF with flying colors."We are checking the engine constantly all through the countdown. But during the last 8 and a half seconds, we are sampling engine data at about a thousand times per second. We have predictions and if we fall outside of those we will abort the launch. "We fired that thing up and all the predictions were right down the middle of the corridor. It looked really clean."    The Delta 4 rocket undergoes the Flight Readiness Firing on October 14. It's distinguished by a five-meter composite payload shroud, a similarly-sized upper stage and the quad arrangement of solid rockets. Previous Medium+ rockets have flown with the smaller four-meter nose cone, an upper stage that carries less fuel and only two solid motors. The United Launch Alliance Delta 4 family was conceived around a modular design, allowing mission planners to match different rocket configurations with the payloads they carry. Earlier flights spanned the spectrum of options ranging from the simplest version featuring just two stages all the way to the triple-body heavy-lifter that can haul the largest satellites. The spacecraft needing a ride to space Saturday night was the Air Force's third Wideband Global SATCOM communications satellite, weighing a hefty 12,800 pounds. The "5,4" variant of Delta 4 fit the role of launching the craft into the desired supersynchronous transfer orbit. The cryogenic main engine and all four solids were ignited on the launch pad, causing the rocket to depart the Florida spaceport in a hurry. The strap-on motors fired for 94 seconds and then separated. The RS-68 engine continued burning through the initial four minutes of flight by consuming liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.Shortly before the first stage's burn concluded, having already left the atmosphere, the 47-foot-long nose shroud covering the satellite was jettisoned. The first stage finished its job and separated about 100 nautical miles over the ocean, leaving rocket's upper stage and cryogenic RL10B-2 powerplant to perform a lengthy firing to achieve an intermediate parking orbit and then a second, brief burn near the western coast of Africa that sent the payload toward an orbit that was targeted to hit 237 nautical miles at perigee, 36,167 nautical miles at apogee and inclined 24 degrees. The payload separated from the launcher just before T+plus 41 minutes while soaring away from the planet over the Indian Ocean."Now more than ever, our nation depends on our ability to successfully deliver space-based capabilities with 100 percent mission success," Col. Gary Henry, commander of the Air Force's Launch and Range Systems Wing.Known as WGS 3, this satellite is the third in a major program to upgrade to the military's main communications infrastructure, replacing the aging Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS) spacecraft. Each WGS has 10 times the capacity of a DSCS satellite, allowing users to process and receive data quicker than ever before. "WGS is the nation's next generation wideband satellite communications system that will increase the security, availability and bandwidth of communications for our globally-engaged service men and woman," said Lt. Col. Dave Hook, commander of the 5th Space Launch Squadron at Cape Canaveral. The satellites supply communications such as maps and data to soldiers on the battlefield, relay video from unmanned aerial reconnaissance drones, route voice calls and data messaging, and even offer quality-of-life considerations like television broadcasts and email delivery to the troops. WGS 1 entered service last year to cover the vast Pacific Command that stretches from the U.S. western coast all the way to Southeast Asia. The WGS 2 satellite launched earlier this year was placed into operation over the Indian Ocean for use by U.S. Central Command to provide coverage for the warfighters in Afghanistan, Iraq and other parts of Southwest Asia. The new WGS 3 satellite will be positioned above the Eastern Atlantic at an orbital slot of 12 degrees West longitude. Its broad reach will cover U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, plus lend additional support over the Middle East."WGS 3 is the next step in deploying Wideband Global SATCOM to augment and eventually replace the legacy Defense Satellite Communications System, or DSCS, which has been the Department of Defense's backbone for satellite communications over the last three decades," said Col. Bill Harding, vice commander, Military Satellite Communications Systems Wing."WGS 3 is slated for operations over EUCOM and AFRICOM and will provide an order of magnitude increase in military communications bandwidth for Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines."The satellite will be maneuvered into a circular geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above the planet where it can match the Earth's rotation and appear parked over one area of the globe. On-orbit testing is scheduled to last a few months, enabling the craft to begin full use next April. The WGS spacecraft are constructed around Boeing's powerhouse 702-model design used by commercial satellite operators. But within the WGS craft are Ka- and X-band military communications packages. The WGS craft offer X-band communications, like the venerable DSCS satellites, to connect with military users anywhere within the field of view from orbit. What's new on WGS is Ka-band communications. Officials describe the extra frequency as a way of serving up large amounts of information for reception by U.S. and allied forces across a wide area using the so-called Global Broadcast System, or GBS."The GBS is like DirecTV to the warfighter. With the emerging requirements for more and more Predator and Reaper unmanned aerial system data, the GBS is allowing us to double the amount of full motion video we are able to carry," Harding said. "With the GBS data, it allows us to bring that full motion video down to small, one-meter terminals."The satellites also adjust and shift their multiple beams of coverage, a feature that is employed as local hotspots on Earth move."That is a key advance for our warfighters of giving them the communications where they need it, when they need it," said Mark Spiwak, the WGS program director for satellite-builder Boeing."We can make (the beams) more oblong, we can put notches in them, we can make them bigger and global. But we can shape the beams and shape the throughput."The Air Force says nine DSCS satellites remain in use while the new WGS craft are continuing to be built and deployed."We're trying to squeeze as much as capability out of the DSCS birds as we possible can. We continue to monitor the capability of the spacecraft and how much fuel in there," Harding said. With the first two WGS satellites already in use and the third en route, the Air Force seems pleased with the new constellation of spacecraft they are assembling."We're getting great feedback in terms of the support they are providing," Harding said. "The first one went up over (Pacific Command). As you realize, that particular theater deals with the tyranny of distance a lot more than some of the other theaters, so (satellite communications) is extremely important to them. Of course, the X-band -- the DSCS replacement capability -- plus the Ka-band provide them not only a lot of bandwidth...but a lot more coverage area. So there's a lot of antennas and we're able to cover forces no matter where they are in the Pacific.""Quality-of-life for the folks on the ships has been significantly increased due to WGS being fielded," Spiwak added, noting that WGS 1 can provide 24/7 Internet and television to the military deployed across the Pacific.Three more WGS satellites are under construction at Boeing's manufacturing plant in El Segundo, California. They are incorporating a slight upgrade from the previous trio of spacecraft and should be ready to begin launching in 2011."We are very active on satellites 4, 5 and 6. In fact, before the end of the year we will be assembling the F4 satellite into a complete satellite," Spiwak said."Those satellites are on schedule...we've got the formula now."Harding said the WGS program -- and its six satellites ordered thus far -- is valued at $2.1 billion."WGS addresses our military's ever-growing appetite for high-bandwidth satellite communications," said Craig Cooning, vice president and general manager at Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems. "We're now working with the Air Force to determine how future WGS satellites could be enhanced to handle missions involving airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and communications-on-the-move."Final Shuttle Mission PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The crew emblem for the final space shuttle mission is now available in our store. Womens Nike Free Run STORY WRITTEN FOR  & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: August 15, 2006NASA managers kicked off a two-day engineering review today to assess the shuttle Atlantis' readiness to blast off Aug. 27 on a long-awaited flight to restart space station assembly.Along with discussing the shuttle's external tank and the ongoing threat of falling foam insulation, engineers and managers also will discuss what to do about bolts holding the shuttle's KU-band antenna in place on the forward right wall of the ship's payload bay.A recent engineering review indicates two of the four bolts holding the KU antenna support box in place are too short. Engineers cannot directly inspect the bolts at the launch pad, but a paperwork review shows the bolts in question may be engaged by less than 2.4 threads. The requirement is 8.4 threads engaged. While the bolts were properly torqued, and while Atlantis has flown 26 flights in the current configuration, engineers cannot prove the bolts have not, or will not, back out at some point, allowing the antenna box to break free. Should it break loose during launch, it could fall the length of the shuttle's six-story cargo bay and cause catastrophic damage.Gaining access to the KU antenna at the launch pad is extremely difficult, but sources say the engineering community wants to replace the bolts rather than launch Atlantis as is. Kennedy Space Center engineers have developed a plan to make the unprecedented repairs, but it's not yet clear what impact such work might have on Atlantis' launch processing schedule.Assuming managers at the flight readiness review approve the current launch target, Atlantis countdown would begin Aug. 24 for a liftoff at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. The launch window closes Sept. 7. The current plan permits up to seven launch attempts within that window. The KU bolt fix, if approved, would require engineers to extend an access platform into the open cargo bay from the payload change out room at pad 39B. A second platform then would be erected on the first to reach the antenna box. Safety nets would be required because the work would take place at a height of nearly 60 feet above the shuttle's aft bulkhead. In addition, the shuttle's robot arm and a 50-foot-long boom used to inspect the ship's heat shield would have to be moved to provide access.A technician, resting on his side in very close quarters beside Atlantis' external airlock, would then remove and replace the two bolts in question. A major concern with working in such tight quarters is inadvertent damage to nearby equipment, but engineers believe they can safely do the work.A variety of other technical issues will be discussed at the flight readiness review, including the status of Atlantis external fuel tank.Atlantis will fly with an external tank that is virtually identical to the one used to launch the shuttle Discovery last month. During the FRR before that flight, NASA's top safety manager and chief engineer voted against launching because so-called ice-frost ramps on the external tank, made up of hand-crafted foam insulation, were formally classified as "probable/catastrophic."That classification means that over the original 100-flight life of a space shuttle, there is a 50-50 chance that a piece of foam large enough to cause catastrophic damage would break away from an ice-frost ramp and hit the spacecraft. The ice-frost ramps received that classification because they are made up of foam that is manually applied on top of other foam. Recent engineering studies show such foam-on-foam buildups can experience cracks because of temperature extremes and pressure changes during fueling cycles. Such cracks, in turn, can lead to foam shedding.Under NASA's existing FRR procedures, the "probable/catastrophic" classification left safety director Bryan O'Connor and chief engineer Chris Scolese with no choice but to vote "no-go" at the end of Discovery's readiness review.NASA Administrator Mike Griffin ultimately approved Discovery's launch over their formal objections, saying he didn't believe the probable/catastrophic classification was justified and that the benefits of keeping the shuttle on the ground until the ramps were redesigned were outweighed by the programmatic need to restart station assembly.NASA currently is in the process of redesigning the ice-frost ramps, but no major changes have been implemented since Discovery's flight and it is assumed O'Connor and Scolese will vote the same way they did last June.During an interview shortly before Discovery took off July 4, Griffin explained his earlier decision in detail."In order to get this to be a hazard, we have to assume that this flight is going to release the maximum amount of mass we've ever seen," he told CBS News. "Probably that's not going to happen, right? But that's what we assume. Then we have to assume the mass comes off in chunks that are bigger than we've ever seen. The biggest chunk we've ever seen come off with this mechanism is .084 pounds. So we set the limit on this thing at .25 pounds, which is the biggest chunk of mass that you could get off of an ice-frost ramp because that's what the whole thing weighs. We've never actually seen that, but we assume that could happen."Then we have to assume that all the mass comes off and it comes off in big chunks and it comes off at the worst possible time, which is about a seven or eight or 10 second window in there ... And then we have to say it hits the worst place on the orbiter. So if all that happens, then we have a hazard that we think rises to a level of real concern."Now, we're not ignoring it, we're going to redesign the ice-frost ramps and we're going to fix it. But I ask myself as an engineer, what are the odds that all those four bad things are going to come true over the next two or three flights while we do a redesign? And I say to myself, not very high. And in fact, when we go and analytically study that, the odds come down to like 1-in-400 or 500, which is well less than many other risks we're taking on the orbiter."Griffin agreed with the observation that complex systems fail in complex ways and worst-case aviation failures do, in fact, occur. But he said the risk posed by the ice-frost ramps is less, in his view, than the overall risk of flying the shuttle at all."Rotating machinery would be well ahead on my list," he said, referring to the shuttle's main engines. "Our micrometeorite and orbital debris hazard is 1-in-200. I remember flight readiness reviews from my youth where every moment was soaked up in turbopump seals. There are other hazards on this machine that we accept in order to fly it."Now that's not good, either, and we're trying to transition to a new system ... which will be at least 10 times safer than the shuttle on its best day. We can do better and we will do better. ... But if I can get individual risks like foam debris down to one in many hundreds, then that's very acceptable in comparison to the other risks which we accept to fly this machine at all. And that's where I think we are."Everyone says why'd you overrule your chief engineer and your safety guy? Well, that's why. Because I believe when we analyze this thing in terms of what is likely to happen as opposed to a worst on worst on worst, the risk is very acceptable."Meanwhile, NASA flight planners have updated the timeline for shuttle mission STS-115, moving space station undocking up one day and deferring late inspection of Atlantis' nose cap and wing leading edges until the day after separation.
